Letter from the Executive Director

Hello FARE Idaho Members and Future Members,

As we move past Labor Day, it’s clear that summer isn’t ready to let go just yet. With the heat still lingering and fire danger very real, our thoughts are with those affected by the fires and the challenging conditions across our state. We hope you’re staying safe during this difficult time.

For those of us spending more time indoors to avoid the smoke and poor air quality, there’s still an opportunity to enjoy the best of what Idaho has to offer. Now is the perfect time to explore indoor activities like cooking and baking, bringing the flavors of the season right into your kitchen. And thanks to our partnership with Reko, you can shop local without stepping outside—just order online and pick up fresh, local produce and products with ease.

Staying cool and supporting our local farmers has never been easier. Let’s make the most of these late summer days by embracing the warmth and comfort of home-cooked meals with the best ingredients Idaho has to offer.

Stay safe, stay cool, and savor the season!

-Tammie

Planning Workshop for Resilient Food Systems in Idaho

American Farmland Trust Idaho Program and Idaho Smart Growth are hosting a Planning Workshop for Resilient Food Systems in Idaho on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024 at Peaceful Belly Farm

Josie and Clay Erskine, who have been vital to the Treasure Valley food system for over 30 years, will welcome attendees to this event, which includes keynote speaker Julia Freedgood and insights from three Idaho leaders: Ariel Agenbroad from the University of Idaho, Mary Huff, Planning Director for Owyhee County, and Amy Mattias, Executive Director of the Sun Valley Institute for Resilience.

After a farm-to-table lunch, participants will engage in group discussions on community resilience and local food system protection, with expert feedback provided. The day will conclude with a networking social hosted by FARE Idaho.

This event is designed for food system stakeholders such as farmers, ranchers, food producers, and community planners. Seating is limited to 50 attendees, so secure your spot soon!

Proposition 1: The Open Primaries Initiative

Idaho voters will see Proposition 1, the Open Primaries Initiative, on their ballots in November. Proposition 1 is a citizen-led election reform initiative that says all voters should have the freedom to vote in all elections. It proposes opening primary elections to all voters, regardless of party affiliation.

Since 2012, Idaho has had a closed primary system, meaning only registered party members can participate. Proposition 1 aims to change this by allowing all voters to participate in all Idaho elections.
